Job Title: Development Executive

Duration: Part-time, 12 month contract

St James’s Hospital Foundation is the fundraising stand-alone charity of St James’s Hospital.  The foundation is going through a period of exciting change and growth and within the past year has a new CEO, Fiachra O’Riordan and a new Director of Philanthropy, Clodagh Memery.

The role of the foundation is to facilitate and attractive private investment to support the work of the hospital and the clinical research programme.  It is a limited company and a registered charity.  Donations to the Foundation are used to enhance facilities, support innovation and research, provide education and training for hospital employees and elevate the standard of care for all patients.  The foundation also manages research funds on behalf of researchers at St James’s Hospital.

The vision of the foundation is to create a culture of giving to St James’s Hospital that will be transformative in providing for the future health and well-being of the nation.

We now need to fill an exciting part-time position to support the Director of Philanthropy in raising private donations for the hospital through a range of appeals and campaigns.

Background to St James’s Hospital

St James’s Hospital Dublin is one of the largest hospitals in the Republic of Ireland with over 300,000 patients annually.  St James’s Hospital subscribes to the principle of highest standard healthcare for its patients as a key priority.  It provides acute medical services to the adult population of Dublin’s south inner city.  In addition it is a provider of a wide range of tertiary services to patients from all over Ireland.  St James’s is the largest single provider of cancer treatment in Ireland.  It houses the largest national radiotherapy centre in the country and it aims to growth this to become one of the leading cancer centres in Europe.

St James’s Hospital is also the largest teaching hospital in Dublin and is the major academic partner of Trinity College Dublin, the leading research university in Ireland, and the highest internationally ranked Irish university.  Medical consultants at St James’s Hospital hold academic and research posts in Trinity College and their work constitutes some of the most important medical research currently undertaken anywhere in the world.  The Clinical Research Facility at St James’s Hospital is a tangible recognition of the strength of the research and clinical relationship between the hospital and TCD.

Job Specification

This post is to provide a range of support services to the major gift fundraising at St James’s Hospital Foundation and play a key role in the coordination of donor appeals and related activities.

This role will be in development focusing initially on administration, appeals, and providing the support for major gifts.  The right candidate will have the opportunity to gain excellent experience in a fundraising environment.

The post holder will work directly to the Director of Philanthropy, providing key support towards the overall fundraising goals in major gifts.  This will include researching potential sources of funding for the major gifts to the hospital under direction, development of biographies, inputting, extraction and collation of such data into the fundraising database, co-ordination of meetings, venues and taking of minutes and assisting in the preparation of events and presentations.  The post holder will assist the Director in relation to developing events / meetings with respect to major gift fundraising.  So it is important that the post-holder is well-organised and can support these activities.

The post holder will also be engaged with regular donor campaigns such as the Christmas Appeal with respect to supporting the administration and contributing to the design of these appeals, including follow-up strategies to grow our donor database.

Person specification

Essential:

Previous work experience across one or more of marketing, research, fundraising, administration, PR, events, and/or sales.

Educated to degree level

Strong research skills – web-based; LinkedIn research; organisation and presentation of information;

Very competent with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc

IT database skills, with a capacity for database analysis required for fundraising

Demonstrate capability to be focused, and keep to deadlines.

Be very well organised and pay close attention to detail.

Excellent interpersonal skills

Experience in research or marketing

Experience in fundraising environment

Demonstrate problem solving skills

Interest in healthcare and philanthropy

Further Details

The salary for this role will be in accordance with experience. This is a part-time post and the successful candidate will be paid an annual salary pro rata of c. €30,000 per annum, adjusted for working 17.5 hours per week.

The contract is offered on a 17.5 hourly week (or similar part-time hours based on agreement), and is initially for a 12 month contract.  The anticipated start date is as soon as possible from September / October 2015.

The appointed candidate will be based in Dublin at St James’s Hospital.  The role may have some time off-site depending on developments in individual projects and where the candidate is most needed.
